One of the top overall prospects from last weekend's Section 7 Tournament proved just how dominant a guard prospect that he is, as Cesar Chavez High School's talented 6-foot-4, 180-pound rising junior guard Ty Ty Washington took center stage with his high school program and demanded the attention of college coaches in attendance.
Washington has been regarded as one of the elite guard prospects in the state for some time, and now, as he prepares to enter his senior season, many college programs are now lining up to land the gifted combo-guard prospect for the future. As a result of Washington's strong performance last weekend, he received numerous scholarhip offers, as he was one of the event's major attractions and biggest benefactors from the weekend.
Washington now has a load of division-I offers to his credit as Portland, Pacific, Loyola Marymount, Grand Canyon, Santa Clara, Pepperdine, Montana, UC-Santa Barbara, Portland State and Louisiana-Monroe have each offered the skilled guard. Washington currently has double-digit division-I offers now and should receive many more scholarship offers over the next month, as more college programs get an opportunity to see him perform in July.
Washington is a superb talent with excellent size as a combo-guard. He is very skilled off the dribble and can create a shot for himself almost at will. He gets to the basket very easily and can create shots for himself or his teammates when he decides to make things happen off the dribble - making it very difficult for opposing defenders to stop him or even slow him down. He can score with either hand when attacking the basket and is a very strong penetrator and finisher in traffic, where he is able to score over bigger defenders in the lane, and with contact. Washington is a very good shooter of the basketball with nice range on his shot, and also has a strong mid-range skillset that allows him to keeps the defense on their toes when guarding him.
Washington is among the state's elite overall talents, and last high school season he definitely proved it as he led his high school program to a big 24-5 overall record on the high school season, while averaging a team-high 23.2 points, 4.4 rebounds, 4.1 assists and 3.3 steals per/contest. Washington should absolutely explode next high school season in the AIA ranks, as he could lead the state in scoring next season. He will definitely rank among the very best scorers in Arizona next season, and will rank among the top individual scorers in the country as a junior and, of course, as a senior.
Last weekend's Section 7 Event was a perfect event for Washington, as he was able to showcase his skillset in front of a large number of college coaches - resulting in numerous scholarship offers for him. Finally, college coaches were able to see just how talented this young man truly is - observing what Arizona basketball enthusiasts have already known for some time.
It will be very interesting to see where Washington ultimately lands, as bigger schools are now beginning to take notice of his level of talent and skillset. I look for many high-major division-I programs to begin to become intrigued with Washington over the next year.
I will continue to follow Washington's recruitment closely, and bring you any recruiting updates as they continue to develop.
