Our game of the week between Mountain Ridge and Boulder Creek girls started out neck and neck, as both teams defended each other’s plan of attack early on. The result was a 23-23 tie at the half. It seems that the Lady Jaguars of Boulder Creek settled for taking three point shots. In reviewing the game stats, 79% of their points total came from three pointers. Mountain Ridge’s Head Coach Jaime Carreon made a defensive adjustment by going to a 1-3-1 zone which forced the Lady Jaguars to take long low percentage shots.

The result of Mountain Ridge’s defensive second half adjustment blew the game wide open for the Lady Mountain Lions. Led by Miyah Verse’s (University of Georgia signee) impressive double-double performance, the Lady Mountain Lions utilized their length and athleticism to deflect passes, block shots and rebound to expand transition offense opportunities. They would go on to win 62-38.

Here are some of the prospects who caught my attention:

Boulder Creek

Abby Dean 2024 5-6 Combo Guard

Dean is a crafty point guard with good scoring ability. She has a good motor, tight handle, and facilitates well. Her tenacity on the floor makes her an intriguing prospect and she is a big part of her team’s success this season.

Madelynn Muniz 2023 5-10 Wing

Muniz is a solid prospect as she has good length, athleticism and range. She runs the floor well and is a pretty good defender. Muniz has committed to the University of Idaho and I expect her to have a huge career there.

Mountain Ridge

Miyah Verse 2023 6-0 Guard

Verse is my #1 overall prospect in the 2023 Class here in Arizona. Her athletic frame and skill-set makes her emerge from the competition. The University of Georgia signee is a downhill scorer who finishes well inside and at mid-range. Her size and athleticism make her tough to guard. Verse is the type of prospect that can fill up the stat sheet. I anticipate her being a pro with continued development.

Gloria Hines 2024 5-11 Guard

Hines is a microwave that knows how to strike the iron when it’s hot. A lanky guard who can score at all three levels. She knows how to utilize her length and abilities to her advantage on both ends of the floor.

Janae Floyd 2023 5-9 Guard

Floyd is an excellent defender who has great anticipation, disrupts the passing lanes, and applies good ball pressure. She utilizes her athletic and defensive abilities to flourish in transition offense. Another nice looking guard prospect with tremendous upside.

Hannah Uhlenhop 2023 6-0 Guard

Uhlenhop is another intriguing prospect as she has good size and skills to play at the next level. She has range, good IQ and footwork. I just found out she is a Grand Canyon University commit for soccer. She is one of the key factors on why Mountain Ridge is making a deep run in the playoffs this season.
