In very surprising fashion on Monday afternoon, it was announced that one of the state's elite young talented prospects, 6-foot-4 rising sophomore guard De'Vontes Cobbs has enrolled at rising local prep power AZ Compass Prep in Chandler, Arizona. Cobbs was an impressive starter last season for 4A defending State Champion Shadow Mountain High School, and helped lead the program to another state championship and a nice 26-3 overall record on the season.
Cobbs has enrolled at AZ Compass Prep for his sophomore season, and will join a nice cast of other top-rated prospects that look to be moving to the program. Thus far, the program has announced numerous top performers to the basketball program, but each of the other top performers have from outside the state. Cobbs is the first top-rated local prospect to announce his decision to attend the program.
Cobbs moved from Milwaukee, Wisconsin and enrolled at Arizona power Shadow Mountain High School in the fall, just before the start to the 2018-2019 high school basketball season - immediately jumping into the Matadors' starting lineup. With the recent departure of former legendary Head Coach Mike Bibby from the championship program, it is still unclear as to what specifically made Cobbs leave the AIA program.
Cobbs is coming off an excellent performance this spring on the club circuit, where he played at a very high level against stiff opposition at his age group with the Arizona Supreme, and a couple other top-rated club programs in the West, including a top performance with NBA superstar Lebron Jame's club program.
Cobbs is a future elite high-major division-I prospect, and already possesses division-I offers from the University of Florida, West Virginia and SMU.
Cobbs is regarded among the top 2022 prospects in the country - joining other fellow nationally elite 2022 Class member prospects in the state, 6-foot-10 rising sophomore post Dylan Anderson (Perry HS), 6-foot-9 rising sophomore prospect Sadraque Nganga (AZ Compass Prep) and 6-foot-4 rising sophomore guard Dorell Thomas (Hillcrest Prep).
Cobbs is an electric guard prospect that is capabe of playing both guard positions on the floor, and is a serious proven scorer. He can score in bunches from all angles of the floor, while slashing to the basket and finishing strong and dunking the basketball in fine fashion over defenders. Cobbs is a playmaker also with the ball in his hands and plays with a very high motor. He is an excellent, lengthy defender that plays passing lanes and defends all over the floor.
I will continue to follow this story as it continues to develop, but this is a huge addition to a growing prep program in the state that continues to make national noise.
