St. Mary's High School's skilled 6-foot-1 junior guard/forward Courtney Ekmark (UCONN commit) has been selected as the 2013 Gatorade Player of the Year after leading St. Mary's HS to another amazing 29-1 record on the season and this year's Division-I state championship - the Knights' third consecutive state championship.
Ekmark was a star of stars on this year's Knights' team, as she led a loaded team of future division-I players to another dominant high school season, as the Lady Knights went without a loss in the state of Arizona for the second season in a row. Ekmark averaged impressive numbers on a loaded roster - putting up 19.6 points, 5 rebounds and 4 steals per/game on the season.
Ekmark is the state’s top 2014 prospect and shocked the country with her huge commitment to UCONN last spring and legendary head coach Geno Auriemma (US Olympic head coach). For her achievements, Ekmark is currently rated among the nation’s Top 25 overall college prospects by ESPN, and also among the nation’s elite prospects in the 2014 class. By the time Ekmark’s high school career comes to an end, she will rank among the top individual scorers in Arizona high school girl’s basketball history, and also one of the most successful players, as her St. Mary’s Knights have dominated the state of Arizona throughout her high school career.
She is the third Gatorade winner from St. Mary's HS, joining Shilpa Tummala (2012) and Davellyn Whyte (2009). Ekmark also is now eligible for National Player of the Year honors by Gatorade.
