Corona Del Sol High School’s gifted 6-foot-3 junior point guard Casey Benson has been selected as the 2013 Gatorade Player of the Year after leading his Corona Del Sol Aztecs to an impressive 29-4 overall record this season and also this year's Division-I state championship – the second consecutive state championship for Corona.
Benson, the state's top point guard prospect and among the elite prospects in Arizona's loaded 2014 class, led his Aztecs to this year's state crown after the Aztecs were not favored to repeat as champions before the high school season. Benson was the catalyst for a team that played with superior confidence all season, as he averaged 20.7 points, 3.3 assists and 1.4 steals per/game on the season.
Benson was also selected as the 2013 Arizona Republic Player of the Year this season.
Benson is among the best prospects in the state, regardless of class, and, as a result, has generated almost double-digit division-I offers already for himself, including high-major offers from such schools as Arizona State, Oregon, Colorado and Boston College. Benson’s pure ability to run a team and make players around him better makes him the best point guard prospect in the state, regardless of class.
Benson is the third boys basketball player from Corona Del Sol to be selected for this honor.
