Chaparral High School's skilled and sharp-shooting 6-foot-6 senior guard/forward Alec Bryan has had a strong senior season for himself, while leading his team to an 18-6 overall record. Bryan's play has been consistent this season for Head Coach Dan Peterson, as he has proven that he is among the state's best skilled players in Arizona's 2019 Class.
Bryan is a high academic prospect and considered several schools for the spring, but he has found his right fit for college, and today Bryan announced that he has given a verbal commitment to play for the University of Chicago next fall. The school is one of the highest academic institutions in America and is located in Chicago’s Hyde Park neighborhood, near Lake Michigan. The school has one of the most beautiful campuses in the country.
Bryan chose the University of Chicago over interest from other high academic institutions such as Yale, Dartmouth, Princeton, Columbia and MIT.
Bryan is an excellent student and carries better than a 4.0 CUM GPA unweighted and a 4.5 CUM GPA weighted. He is an amazing student at every academic level, which benefits his basketball skillset quite nicely.
Alec Bryan is a terrific young man with excellent work ethic, on and off the court, and possesses a great attitude and smile - a smile that does not give every indication of what this young man has been through in his short life. He has had to overcome a lot personally throughout his high school career to get to this point in his young life, where he now has the opportunity to give a commitment to a high academic institution.
At the beginning of his junior season, Bryan decided to play for a new prep program in the state known as CGM Prep, which was loaded with basketball talent. Bryan fit in quite nicely with the talented lineup at the new program, but shortly after making his decision to go there, Bryan decided to go back to his high school program and finish out his career at Chaparral. CGM Prep would soon be shut down just after Bryan's decision to return to Chaparral - proving that a higher power was looking out for Bryan and his future.
Last summer, while preparing himself for a big July performance for himself, Bryan worked out with his personal trainer, the now deceased Billy Knight. Bryan worked out with Knight consistently on a weekly basis, and just hours after a workout one night, Knight would take his own life, just hours after working out Alec in a gym. Alec was very close to Knight and spoke with him often about basketball and life.
Bryan has been through a lot in the short span of his young life, but he is a diligent young man that has stayed focused on his craft, and on his future. I am very proud of him and our staff here at Arizona Preps is very excited about his future. Congratulations to Alec Bryan and his family on his commitment from our staff, and good luck to him in the future.
Arizona Hoop Review Scouting Report: Standing 6-foot-6 in height, Bryan possesses excellent size and shoots the basketball with unlimited range and a quick release. He shoots a high percentage with range and is able to stretch the defense a great deal once he gets going. He has a nice dribble and pull-up jump shot, and is able to get his shot off quite easily against defensive pressure. Bryan also handles the basketball very well and has good versatility as a result. He likes to bring up the basketball in the open floor, and make plays for himself and others in transition. He can shoot over defenders on the wing, and also has a good ability to post up smaller defenders. He is a very good passer that pushes the basketball up the floor, and finds the open man. A good rebounder, although he can focus more in this area of his game to maximize his potential as a player. A good defender that plays passing lanes and has very good anticipation. A good overall athlete. Fundamentally sound prospect.
