One of the better prospects in Arizona's 2015 class is not well known yet by college coaches, but is making his case quickly with opposing high school teams. While currently soaring under the recruiting radar, Moon Valley High School's talented 6-foot-3 senior guard prospect DJ Lujan has emerged as one of the better guard prospects in Arizona's 2015 class.
Lujan is a nice athletic talent that has a very good ability to score the basketball off the ribble on slashing drives to the basket, or from the perimeter where he has a sweet left-handed shooting stroke with nice range. He is able to get from the three-point line to the basket on one dribble, where he is a good finisher and has excellent body control. He also gets to the free-throw line quite often, since he is left-handed and is difficult to defend for opposing guards. He has nice lift off the floor and a strong, athletic frame for his size.
Lujan is an active rebounder and has a nice motor on both ends of the floor, which can lead to him getting himself into foul trouble at times. He is a good defender with quick hands and feet and plays the passign lanes very well. A slasher, Lujan is also very good in the open floor and should only continue to develop a great deal over the next two years with natural physical maturity.
Currently, Lujan has led his Rockets to a 2-2 start to the season with fellow teammate, 6-foot-6 junior forward Bryce Cheney sidelined due to injury (hip pointer).
Lujan works very hard on and off the court to maximize his potential as a player. While going to school, he also works as well to help with the expenses for his family at home - an amazing attribute for a high school student-athlete these days.
Currently soaring under the recruiting radar, Lujan is hopeful to attract some college coaches with his play this senior season, and he is well deserving of the attention. This young man aspires to play at the highest level possible for himself, and may need a short stint at the junior college ranks to maximize his potential as a player. A smaller four-year college program would be ideal for him, since he is also a very good student that carries a 3.4 CUM GPA.
Lujan will lead the Rockets tomorrow night (12/5) against local rival Cortez High School, in an exciting match-up for the Rockets. Since I am a graduate of Moon Valley HS (1991), and I love this young man's work ethic and desire for the game, I am really pushing for this young man to go as far as he possibly can.
