Chandler Basketball Powerhouse Continues to Elevate Arizona’s National Basketball Reputation

In what can only be described as an extraordinary week for one of the nation’s premier prep basketball programs, AZ Compass Prep enjoyed a monster week on the national recruiting trail, as three of its elite basketball prospects announced their college commitments to three major NCAA Division-I basketball programs. The remarkable recruiting week further solidified the Chandler-based basketball powerhouse’s reputation as one of America’s premier destinations for elite high school basketball talent, and demonstrated the program’s continued ability to prepare, develop and promote players to the highest levels of college basketball.

The three commitments included 6-foot-7 senior forward DeMarcus Henry, ESPN’s No. 2 overall prospect nationally in the Class of 2027, who committed to North Carolina; nationally regarded guard Jakyi “Kyi Kyi” Miles, who announced his commitment to Arizona State University and his decision to reclassify from the Class of 2028 into the Class of 2027; and 6-foot-9 senior forward Zion Green, ESPN’s No. 16 overall prospect nationally in the 2027 class, who selected Alabama. Three elite prospects. Three nationally respected college basketball programs. Three major commitments in a span of just six days.

For AZ Compass Prep, it was another exceptional accomplishment for a basketball program that has consistently demonstrated its ability to attract and develop some of the nation’s most talented basketball prospects. More importantly, the week represented another major achievement for Arizona basketball, which continues to establish itself as one of the country’s most respected basketball recruiting markets.

The biggest announcement of the week came Friday, October 30, when AZ Compass Prep’s DeMarcus Henry announced his commitment to the University of North Carolina during a nationally televised appearance on ESPN’s NBA Today. Henry, a five-star forward and ESPN’s No. 2-ranked overall prospect in the 2027 recruiting class, selected the Tar Heels over an impressive list of finalists that included Arkansas, Kentucky and Louisville. The announcement immediately became the biggest national recruiting story of the week. For North Carolina, Henry’s commitment represented a tremendous recruiting victory for new Head Coach Michael Malone, the former Denver Nuggets Head Coach who led the franchise to an NBA championship in 2023. Malone, who is beginning his tenure at one of college basketball’s most prestigious programs, landed his first five-star prospect and one of the most highly regarded recruits to commit to North Carolina in recent memory.

For AZ Compass Prep, Henry’s announcement provided another example of the program’s ability to place elite basketball prospects at the nation’s most prestigious universities. The talented forward has developed into America’s premier basketball prospect - possessing an impressive combination of size, athleticism, versatility and offensive skillset. His ability to handle the basketball, create scoring opportunities, finish around the basket and defend multiple positions made him one of the most coveted prospects in the country. Henry’s recruitment attracted considerable attention from college basketball’s most recognizable programs, with North Carolina ultimately emerging victorious in a highly competitive recruiting battle. The significance of his commitment extends beyond the individual player.

North Carolina has not traditionally maintained a substantial recruiting presence in Arizona. Securing a nationally elite prospect from an Arizona prep school further demonstrates how the state’s basketball landscape has evolved.

For AZ Compass Prep, Henry’s commitment represents another major national recruiting achievement. For Arizona basketball, it represents another reminder that the country’s traditional college basketball powers are increasingly recognizing the talent competing within the state.

The remarkable recruiting week actually began Monday, October 26, when AZ Compass Prep standout Jakyi “Kyi Kyi” Miles announced his commitment to Arizona State University. Miles, one of the nation’s premier young guards, was ranked No. 19 nationally by ESPN in the Class of 2028 when he made his announcement. The talented prospect also revealed his decision to reclassify into the Class of 2027, allowing him to graduate a year early and join the Sun Devils for the 2027–28 college basketball season. For Arizona State and new Head Coach Randy Bennett, Miles’ commitment represented a significant recruiting victory.

Bennett, who arrived at Arizona State after an outstanding 25-year coaching career at Saint Mary’s College, has made attracting and retaining elite basketball talent a major priority, as he works to elevate the Sun Devils program. Landing Miles, a highly regarded local prospect with considerable national recruiting attention, represents an important accomplishment in those efforts.

The dynamic guard previously starred at Mesa High School before transferring to AZ Compass Prep. During his sophomore season at Mesa, Miles averaged an impressive 26.6 points, 6.6 rebounds, 5 assists and 2 steals per game, establishing himself as one of Arizona’s most exciting young basketball prospects. His explosive scoring ability, offensive creativity, ball-handling skills and impressive court vision attracted attention from numerous major college basketball programs. Ultimately, Miles elected to remain in Arizona and become part of Bennett’s rebuilding efforts in Tempe.

His commitment carries additional historical significance. Arizona State has enjoyed several notable recruiting victories over the past two decades, including the arrival of future NBA superstar James Harden in 2007 and highly regarded national prospect Josh Christopher in 2020. Miles now joins that tradition as one of the Sun Devils’ most significant recent recruiting additions and their highest-ranked local commitment since Jahii Carson.

For AZ Compass Prep, his commitment provides another example of the program’s ability to prepare elite players for major college basketball opportunities. And for Arizona basketball, Miles’ decision provides a particularly encouraging development. Rather than leaving the state to continue his basketball career, one of Arizona’s most talented prospects will remain home and compete in the Big 12 Conference. It is another significant recruiting victory for both Arizona State and AZ Compass Prep.

The extraordinary week concluded Saturday, October 31, when AZ Compass Prep’s 6-foot-9 senior forward Zion Green announced his commitment to the University of Alabama. Green, a five-star prospect ranked No. 16 nationally by ESPN in the Class of 2027, selected the Crimson Tide after an extensive recruitment that included several major college basketball programs. The talented forward chose Alabama over other prominent contenders, including Kansas, Oklahoma and Ole Miss. His commitment represented another significant recruiting victory for Alabama Head Coach Nate Oats, who has established the Crimson Tide among the country’s most competitive college basketball programs. Oats has developed an offensive system that emphasizes offensive versatility, perimeter shooting and athleticism.

Green’s combination of size, length, mobility and developing offensive skills makes him an intriguing addition to Alabama’s future roster. At 6-foot-9, Green possesses the versatility to impact games in multiple ways, whether attacking the basket, rebounding, defending or utilizing his developing perimeter skills. His ability to play in an up-tempo system fits well with the style of basketball that has made Alabama one of the nation’s most exciting programs. Green’s commitment also represented Alabama’s second addition to its 2027 recruiting class.

For AZ Compass Prep, the announcement completed an extraordinary six-day stretch in which three of the program’s most talented prospects committed to major college basketball programs. While Henry’s decision attracted national attention and Miles’ commitment generated considerable excitement throughout Arizona, Green’s announcement provided the finishing touch to an exceptional recruiting week.

The three commitments collectively demonstrated the depth of nationally regarded talent currently competing within the AZ Compass Prep basketball program.  While the three individual commitments are tremendous achievements, the larger story involves the continued national recruiting success of AZ Compass Prep. The Chandler-based program has established itself among the nation’s most respected prep basketball institutions, consistently attracting highly regarded prospects and preparing them for opportunities at major NCAA Division-I programs.

Year after year, AZ Compass Prep assembles talented rosters featuring nationally ranked players, high-major college prospects and future professional basketball talent. The program has developed an impressive reputation for its competitive national schedule, demanding basketball environment and ability to provide players with significant exposure to college recruiters and professional evaluators.

According to the program’s official athletics website, AZ Compass Prep has produced (7) NBA players, including four first-round NBA Draft selections, and lists more than (50) current Division-I athletes among its basketball alumni. Those numbers provide considerable perspective on the program’s national impact.

Under the leadership of Director of Operations and Program Director Pete Kaffey, AZ Compass Prep has continued to expand its national basketball presence, while building a culture centered on player development, competition and preparation for the next level. Kaffey, who previously worked with elite basketball talent at Findlay Prep, has played an important role in the program’s development and national success. However, the program’s accomplishments extend well beyond any single coach or individual recruiting class.

AZ Compass Prep has developed a recognizable national identity, one associated with elite competition, nationally ranked prospects and consistent opportunities for players to advance their basketball careers. The latest commitments from Henry, Miles and Green further reinforce that reputation.

Perhaps the most important aspect of AZ Compass Prep’s continued success is its significant contribution to the overall growth and national recognition of Arizona basketball. Over the past three decades, Arizona has experienced a remarkable transformation in its basketball culture. The state has evolved from a developing high school basketball market into a nationally recognized destination for elite prep basketball talent. Programs such as AZ Compass Prep, Bella Vista Prep, Dream City Christian and other nationally competitive institutions have helped establish Arizona as a major destination for college basketball recruiters and national basketball evaluators.

AZ Compass Prep has been particularly influential in that growth. Through its ability to assemble nationally competitive teams, attract highly regarded prospects and consistently produce Division-I and professional basketball talent, the program has helped elevate the national perception of Arizona basketball. Its participation in major national events and competition against some of America’s most prestigious prep basketball programs has provided additional visibility for the state. The program’s success has also demonstrated that elite basketball players do not necessarily need to attend traditional national powers on the East Coast, or in other established basketball markets to receive significant recruiting attention. They can compete in Arizona, develop their abilities and attract scholarship opportunities from the nation’s most recognizable universities.

The commitments of Henry, Miles and Green are the latest examples of that new reality. North Carolina, Arizona State and Alabama represent three different major college basketball programs, each with its own recruiting priorities, coaching philosophies and expectations. Yet all three programs identified AZ Compass Prep as a source of elite basketball talent. That is a remarkable statement about the program’s standing in the national recruiting landscape. The three major commitments also arrive as AZ Compass Prep prepares to begin another demanding national basketball schedule during the 2026–27 season.

Once again, the Dragons feature a roster loaded with talented prospects capable of competing against some of the country’s premier prep basketball programs. AZ Compass Prep competes in the prestigious Nike EYBL Scholastic League, which features many of the nation’s most highly regarded basketball programs. The competition provides players with opportunities to face elite opponents throughout the season, while gaining national exposure. The program has also become a consistent participant in the nation’s premier postseason prep basketball event, now known as Chipotle Nationals.

AZ Compass Prep finished as the national runner-up in 2023 and has made five appearances in the national championship tournament. Those accomplishments demonstrate the level of success the program has achieved on the national stage. Now, with another outstanding collection of talent, the Dragons will enter the season with expectations of competing once again for a coveted berth in Chipotle Nationals, and an opportunity to pursue a national championship.

The recent commitments of Henry, Miles and Green have already provided the program with significant national attention before the season begins. And with another highly competitive national schedule approaching, AZ Compass Prep will have additional opportunities to showcase its talent against America’s best high school basketball programs.

When evaluating the significance of AZ Compass Prep’s remarkable recruiting week, the individual accomplishments are certainly worthy of recognition. DeMarcus Henry, one of the nation’s premier basketball prospects, committed to one of college basketball’s most prestigious programs. Kyi Kyi Miles, one of Arizona’s brightest young basketball stars, elected to remain home and become an important part of Arizona State’s future. Zion Green, another nationally ranked five-star prospect, committed to an Alabama program that has established itself among college basketball’s elite. Each commitment represents a significant achievement for the individual player and his family. Collectively, however, the three announcements represent something much larger.

They demonstrate the continued national recruiting power of AZ Compass Prep, and reinforce the program’s reputation as one of America’s premier destinations for elite basketball talent. For college basketball coaches across the country, AZ Compass Prep has become a program that demands attention. For elite basketball prospects seeking opportunities at the highest levels of the game, it has become an established destination. And for Arizona basketball, its continued success represents another important chapter in the state’s remarkable emergence as a national basketball powerhouse.

Arizona Preps has covered the growth of basketball throughout the state since 1999, witnessing the development of countless elite prospects, championship programs and nationally recognized basketball institutions. The continued success of AZ Compass Prep is another powerful example of that evolution. The state of Arizona has become an increasingly important recruiting destination for college basketball’s most prominent programs, and AZ Compass Prep has played a significant role in that transformation.

Three nationally ranked prospects. Three major Division I commitments. Three nationally respected college basketball programs. All in one remarkable week. For AZ Compass Prep, it was a monster recruiting week. For Arizona basketball, it was another demonstration of just how far the state’s basketball reputation has advanced. And for the Dragons, who are preparing to pursue a national championship, the latest recruiting accomplishments serve as another reminder that AZ Compass Prep remains one of the nation’s premier high school basketball programs.
