Arizona basketball continues to produce high-level talent every year, and while many of the state’s nationally recognized prospects receive the majority of the attention early, there are always talented players who steadily develop and eventually force college coaches to take notice. One player quickly fitting that description is JKP Academy Prep's 6-foot-11 junior post Adrien Isaac Porras. We have spoken about Porras for some time, while Porras has quietly developed into one of Arizona basketball’s premier sleeper prospects and is now beginning to generate serious Division-I recruiting attention after an impressive spring and summer showing already.
For those who have followed his development closely, his emergence is not surprising. Porras has continued improving every season and has steadily built momentum with his combination of skill level, athleticism, confidence and production. While he may not have entered high school basketball carrying the same level of exposure as some of Arizona’s nationally ranked prospects, he has continued proving that talent ultimately rises. College coaches are beginning to notice.
As evaluation periods continue throughout the spring and summer months, Porras has become a player attracting increased recruiting attention from programs looking for talented prospects capable of impacting winning. What makes Porras especially intriguing is his size and upside. He continues to improve physically, while developing his overall offensive game and becoming a more complete player on both ends of the floor. His confidence level has grown significantly, and his production continues trending upward at the right time. Those close to Arizona basketball have always taken notice, and college coaches are beginning to do the same.
Currently, Porras has received offers from Kansas, Arizona State, Grand Canyon, Cal State Bakersfield, Pepperdine, Sacramento State, Weber State and Arkansas Pine-Buff. These are some nice offers for him already, but I expect him to garner many more offers over time - over the next several months, as more college programs lay eyes on him.
Porras is not only a unicorn physically and as a pure talent, he has a leg up on his competition, as he has trained hard for many years with his personal trainer and mentor Jimmy Scroggins. Scroggins is one of the top basketball trainers in the state, and is a former standout ball player himself, a graduate and top performer at North High School, where he won state championships. Scroggins has passed on his discipline and dedication to his craft to Porras, and it has helped to define and develop Porras a great deal. Porras cant lose and has a very bright future ahead of himself.
Scroggins currently coaches Porras on the Nike circuit with Team United 17U club program.
Porras represents the type of prospect college programs often uncover later in the recruiting cycle—a talented player whose development curve continues accelerating. Arizona has become one of America’s top basketball hotbeds in recent years, producing elite talent at the prep, high school and junior college levels, and players like Adrien Isaac Porras continue proving there is high-level talent emerging throughout every corner of the state. Look for Porras to have an excellent remainder of the spring and summer period, while continuing to position himself as one of Arizona basketball’s top rising sleeper prospects.
Parras is also an excellent student as well and carries a 4.0 CUM GPA. I will continue to follow Porras closely over time, as he continues to develop as a player and as a college prospect.
Arizona Preps Scouting Report: Porras is a unique talent and a unicorn of sorts, as he has always been much, much larger than his competition - looking out of place against much smaller and lesser competition. He has grown physically, so fast, that he will still need to catch up to his size over time, and he will. Over time, Porras will continue to grow physically a great deal and will fill into his long thin frame, getting much stronger and more athletic. He is absolutely dominant at his age group, and as he matures, he should begin to dominate older competition as well, as he has broad shoulders and a good wingspan on a large frame. The future is unusually bright for this young man and college programs will only continue to take notice, which should make for a recruiting frenzy over time. He has very good mobility and versatility already as a young prospect. He runs the floor like a guard, handles the ball, passes very well and has a good overall feel. There is not much Porras cannot do already in his skillset, leaving for a very high ceiling in his future. A left-hander, Porras has a soft touch from the perimeter, although he has not needed to use it much, as he is able to dominate around the basket. As he continues to mature physically, he will become a serious problem for any age group, as he is simply a unique talent, unlike many we have ever seen.
