In today’s ever-changing college basketball landscape, timing is everything, and for Charles Southern transfer 6-foot- junior point guard Amari Carraway, the journey to his next opportunity has been one of patience, persistence and production. After a strong junior season at Charleston Southern University, Carraway has officially landed at Chicago State University, where he will continue his college career under Head Coach Landon Bussie.
Caraway made the most of his opportunity this past season, appearing in (24) games and showing flashes of the scoring ability that has made him such an intriguing prospect. One performance, however, separated itself from the rest. Against Warren Wilson College, Caraway delivered a historic night - setting the Charleston Southern program record with (11) made three-pointers in a single game, while also posting a new career-high in scoring with 36 points. It was a performance that highlighted his elite shooting ability and his confidence when given the green light.
Throughout the season, Caraway reached double figures in five different contests, continuing to show his ability to contribute offensively at a high level.
The spring recruiting period proved to be a challenging one. Caraway received significant Division I interest, but as programs across the country filled roster spots quickly, opportunities began to shrink. It’s a reality many players are facing in today’s recruiting climate. Despite his production and potential, Caraway found himself available late in the process, a situation that ultimately led to a major opportunity.
Chicago State Head coach Landon Bussie and his staff recognized Caraway’s ability and moved quickly to bring him into the program. Bussey was instrumental in Caraway’s recruitment, identifying him as a key addition who can provide immediate value. At Chicago State, Caraway will have the opportunity to expand his role, showcase his shooting ability, and continue developing as a complete guard. His ability to stretch the floor, score in bunches, and play with confidence makes him a strong fit for the program moving forward.
Caraway’s journey is a reminder that the path isn’t always linear, but for those who stay ready, opportunities come. With his proven ability to shoot the basketball at a high level and his continued development as a player, he has all the tools to make a significant impact next season. Now at Chicago State, the stage is set for Amari Caraway to take another step forward in his college career.
At Arizona Preps, we recognize the work, resilience, and commitment it takes to navigate today’s recruiting landscape. Amari Caraway has earned this opportunity. We look forward to following his continued development and success at the Division-I level, and wish him the very best in his future endeavors.
Arizona Preps Scouting Report: Carraway is a rare find among point guard prospects, as he is a fast and electric guard prospect that pushes the basketball hard and plays with a high level of confidence on the basketball court - on both ends of the floor. Carraway is an alpha-male that leads any chance he gets. Carraway resembles a young fighter and that of Floyd Mayweather, and he plays like it. He is tough and expects to be the best player on the floor whenever he takes the court. He knows he belongs and does not take a back seat to anyone. He is a floor general with the basketball in his hands and a facilitator that can score at a high level, which puts maximum pressure on opposing defenses. He pushes the basketball often up the floor, and is always looking to make a play off the dribble. An excellent ball handler and passer that sees the floor, and loves to create off the dribble - creating scoring opportunities for himself and his teammates. He is a very good shooter of the basketball with range, and has an explosive first step to blow past defenders and finish in the lane, which he does quite well over and around bigger defenders. Carraway has the potential to become a lock-down defender as well. He has very quick hands and feet and plays passing lanes. A complete guard prospect that is fundamentally sound and plays electric on the floor with swag.
