In exciting and shocking news this week, it was announced that Millennium High School's highly accomplished Head Coach Ty Amundsen has resigned from his duties as head coach for one of the state's premier high school programs, and has now accepted an assistant coaching position with Arizona State University and Head Coach Bob Hurley.
Millennium High School’s basketball program has long stood as a powerhouse in Arizona, and under the leadership of Head Coach Ty Amundsen, the Tigers set the standard for excellence. In the process, the program has become a Nike Elite High School program. With Amundsen at the helm, Millennium compiled an impressive 138-51 overall record and captured two 5A State Championships along with an Open Division State Championship. A proven winner with a championship pedigree, Amundsen also achieved three state titles at Estrella Foothills High School, while also making deep playoff runs at St. Mary’s HS, before taking over Millennium. Amundsen elevated Millennium HS into one of the premier programs in the West.
Amundsen’s arrival at Arizona State brings with it decades of experience, deep ties to Arizona basketball, and a proven track record of developing players at the high school, club and junior college levels. Known for his coaching intellect, relationship-building, and ability to maximize player potential, Amundsen has been one of the most respected coaches in the state for many years.
At Millennium High School, Amundsen helped build one of the state’s most successful programs. Under his leadership, Millennium became a consistent Open Division contender, producing numerous Division-I prospects and playing a fast-paced, disciplined brand of basketball that earned statewide respect.
In addition to his success at the high school level, Amundsen has been deeply involved in the club circuit and has worked with many of the state’s top players through club programs like the Arizona Select and Arizona Power. He has also coached in the NJCAA, giving him a well-rounded background that includes nearly every level of basketball development.
His transition to the college level is not only a testament to his coaching ability, but also a reflection of how valuable local knowledge and player development expertise are to today’s recruiting landscape. Amundsen is expected to play a key role in in-state recruiting and player development for ASU, helping the program retain and attract top Arizona talent—something that has long been a priority for the Sun Devils.
This hire sends a strong message that Arizona State is committed to recruiting the best players in the state and building relationships within the local basketball community. Ty Amundsen’s impact will be felt immediately, and his move to Tempe represents the next step in a remarkable coaching career rooted in the Arizona basketball tradition.
Congratulations to Coach Amundsen and his family, and the Millennium basketball program on this amazing accomplishment.
