We are excited to welcome back the Sunnyside Lady Blue Devils. Head Coach Justin Delgado has built a highly competitive program in South Tucson. His teams play at an aggressive pace, which can be fatal for opposing teams. I had the pleasure to know Coach Delgado for nearly a decade. His teams are disciplined and execute his game-plans efficiently, which proves why he is one of the better basketball coaches in the state. Here is our conversation:

Q: What was your overall record last season?

A: Our team finished last season with a 14-11 record.

Q: How deep into the playoffs did you and your team go?

A: We won the play-in game versus Verrado. Lost in first round versus #4 Gilbert 40-34 (5A Playoffs)

Q: How does it feel to be invited to the 2nd Annual Arizona Preps Summer Clash? What makes this event stand out to you and your girls?

A: Being invited is something we don't take for granted and we feel recognized as a very competitive team. This event is special because it brings teams in from all across Arizona to provide a highly competitive tournament. Also the media coverage is a plus to get our kids recognized from outside their own local reporters.

Q: Who are your top players to watch for? Do they have college offers?

A: 2024 #23 SF/PF Nayeli Nidez-Acuna (1st Team Region/OPOY), 2023 #0 SG Gabriella "Gabi" Delgado (1st Team Region/DPOY) and 2023 #12 PG Lexi Delgado (2nd Team Region) - no offers yet but we are hoping to change that over the next year.

Q: What is the goal for your team heading into this summer?

A: Our goals are to develop this year's current team identity and individual roles. Also to continue developing skill wise as players individually. And lastly to play competitively against high caliber teams.

Coach Delgado is leading his program in transitioning to 6A. He has the ship heading in the right direction, as he has a solid core of returning players. He always does a great job with his teams and I anticipate the Lady Blue Devils to turn some heads heading into this tournament.
