Over the next few days we will be unveiling a team preview from some of the teams competing in the 2nd Annual Arizona Preps Summer Clash. This summer we have expanded the field to (16) teams. All of the teams participating qualified for the state playoffs in their respective divisions. The combined record for all the teams in the tournament field is 222-58.
I was able to catch up with Head Coach Savannah Bix of Poston Butte High School. Here is the Q&A of our conversation:
Q: What was your overall record last season?
A: We were 18-9 last season. We made program history in qualifying for the playoffs for the first time in school history.
Q: How deep into the playoffs did you and your team go?
A: We made it to the Sweet 16 and lost to 4A State Runner Up Flagstaff.
Q: How does it feel to be invited to the 2nd Annual Arizona Preps Summer Clash? What makes this event stand out to you and your girls?
A: It feels great to be invited. It was a great event last year and we are grateful for the exposure for our kids!
Q: Who are your top players to watch for? Do they have college offers?
A: Our top players to watch for include: Adriana Bachman (2023). A guard that does a little bit of everything. She's tough as nails, she's willing to do the dirty work, like take charges, play relentless defense and has been really working on expanding her offense. She holds an NAIA offer from the University of the Southwest (NM) and tons of NAIA/JUCO interest.
Alex Swanson (2023). A versatile point guard that can get to the rim at will. Alex is a left handed guard who can defend and score in various ways.
Symirah Gray (2025). A guard that is extremely shifty and can get downhill and score in the paint. She's still young but she's developing her game A LOT, and has been working on her pull-up jumper game, which makes her even harder to defend.
Julia Harris (2024). A tough as nails, gritty defender and rebounder. She does a lot of little things that help us be successful.
Q: What is the goal for your team heading into this summer?
A: Our goal this summer is to play as many top teams as possible and to work on developing our offense to be a little more structured. We rely on our defense to create for us offensively, which is great, but doesn't work against some of the better teams we play with solid guard play.
The Lady Broncos of Poston Butte are one of the exciting teams to watch in the 4A Division. Coach Bix does a fantastic job with her program, as she is an excellent motivator. Her kids play hard for her and look to compete night in and night out. I believe she has the horses in the barn to make another playoff run and a regional championship.
