One of my favorite teams to watch compete has accepted the invite to the 2nd Annual Arizona Preps Summer Clash. The Deer Valley Lady Skyhawks have unfinished business, as they were upset in the State Playoff Quarter Finals. Head Coach Almazan does a phenomenal job with her team. This summer is the start of a pivotal point for her team to make a run at a State Championship. Here is the Q&A from our conversation:
Q: What was your overall record last season?
A: We finished with a 25-3 record.
Q: How deep into the playoffs did you and your team go?
A: We made it to the quarterfinals of the 4A State Playoffs.
Q: How does it feel to be invited to the 2nd Annual Arizona Preps Summer Clash? What makes this event stand out to you and your girls?
A: The exposure that we receive as high school players- We are honored to be able to play against high competition in order to be able to prepare for our upcoming season. It truly allows the girls to bond over the summer time and allows coaches time to go back and make the adjustments needed in order to be successful.
Q: Who are your top players to watch for? Do they have college offers?
A: Senior-Michaela Lee; Senior- Eliyah Brosseau; Junior- Nadya Guiterrez (pictured); Freshman- Molly Childress; Sophomore- Lilah Clark; Sophomore- Ashlynn Jensen- Junior – Toyin Akinsipe- All Unsigned. My upperclassmen are garnering college interests, but nothing set in stone. We look forward to exposure events like this to help kick start their college recruitment.
Q: What is the goal for your team heading into this summer?
A: We want to execute our game plan and win close games. We also would like to improve our stamina and free throw percentage.
The Lady Skyhawks are one of the top teams in the event. We are excited to see them pick up where they left off last season. The more exciting part is to see how all of the teams compete in our high level event.
