Our team preview series for this week's Arizona Preps Summer Clash event continues with the Lady Raiders from Cibola High School (Yuma, AZ). Head Coach Anthony Gerg is doing a phenomenal job with his program, as their team has enjoyed great success over the last few seasons. His team returns a solid core who is looking to make another deep run in the 6A State Playoffs. Here is our Q&A from our conversation:
Q: What was your overall record last season?
A: We were 16-1 in power point games with an overall record of 22-4.
Q: How deep into the playoffs did you and your team go?
A: We drew the #6 seed, but was ousted by eventual 6A State Runner-Up Perry High School in the first round.
Q: How does it feel to be invited to the 2nd Annual Arizona Preps Summer Clash? What makes this event stand out to you and your girls?
A: This is the 2nd year we’ve been to the Summer Clash. I enjoy the competitive field and Arizona Preps gives our girls statewide media coverage and exposure. We are excited to be back and compete.
Q: Who are your top players to watch for? Do they have college offers?
A: Our top players to watch for include: Rori Hoffmeyer (2023), Caylie Holyfield (2023), Kiara Hinton (2023), Sierra Bomhower (2024) and Isabela Molina (2024) - all players still looking for their 1st offer. I believe they can play at the next level, as they have been working really hard in the classroom - on and off the court.
Q: What is the goal for your team heading into this summer?
A: Our goal is to develop our fundamental skills, build team chemistry and compete against some of the best schools in the state.
Coach Gerg is one of the state’s most underrated coaches, as he does a great job with his teams. His girls are disciplined and execute their system. I anticipate his Lady Raiders to make a deeper run in the state tournament and win their region.
