One of the top young prospects in the state's 2022 Class of performers is St. Mary's High School's gifted 6-foot-4 freshman wing prospect Garrison Phelps. One of the top young prospects in the state, Phelps is one young prospect definitely on the rise for the immediate future. The son of a former and very accomplished division-I coach, Phelps is one prospect to keep a close eye on.
In his first season of high school this past year at St. Mary's, Phelps quickly emerged under the strong leadership of Head Coach Damin Lopez. Phelps put up good numbers for the Knights this season while a freshman starter for the team, and seeing much of his time as the team's point man - an impressive fact for a developing young prospect that is capable of playing multiple positions on the floor. His versatility as a prospect, over time, will really benefit him a great deal in his development as a player and also in his overall college recruitment.
Phelps is still growing a great deal and has really grown physically over the past two years that I have observed him as a player. Today, he is now getting stronger physically and is able to make very athletic plays in a game that he could not just a year ago, as he plays well above the rim these days, and only will get much more impressive physically over time, as his body matures.
Currently, Phelps is able to play as a 1, 2 or 3 on the floor, and he will continue to develop in this area of versatility for himself as a player. Over time, this fact will be very important for him in his overall development, as it will make him very valuable to college programs in the future. He is a good shooter of the basketball with range on his shot and also has a good mid-range game that allows him to make plays off the dribble for himself and others. Phelps has a very high basketball IQ as a player, as a result of being around the game his entire life and working with some of the best coaches in America as a youth. His developed understanding of the game has allowed him to play as a point guard, and will significantly benefit him in the future. Phelps is a "Scottie Pippen-type" of player and prospect - a bigger wing that will be able to play as a point guard primarily. He could grow also to 6-6 or 6-7 in heigth, which would really benefit him.
Phelps is also an active rebounder that rebounds outside of his area, and is able to start the fast break after collecting the basketball and pushing the ball on the break, where he is very productive in the open floor. He is also a good shotblocker, as a result of his length and athleticism. He also hasa good overall motor and gets a lot done on the floor. Phelps is a budding young prospect with excellent potential and upside for the future.
Over time, I look for Phelps to become one of the more sought after recruiting targets in the state, as the St. Mary's HS program continues to blossom under the strong leadership of Damin Lopez, and Phelps gain valuable experience on the national club circuit, while playing for the Arizona Supreme alongside such national talents as Dylan Anderson and Devontes Cobbs.
Phelps is coming off an excellent showing last weekend where he helped lead the Supreme to an undefeated record in the Pangos Spring Live event in Los Angeles, CA.
I will continue to follow the rapid development of Phelps as a player, and also focus on his college recruitment as it begins to take shape this club season, bringing you any updates as they begin to develop.
