Scottsdale Saguaro High School is quietly building something special in the Arizona basketball landscape, and 6-foot-5 freshman standout Bentley Elrod is right at the heart of it. A versatile and athletic wing prospect, Elrod turned heads with an impressive freshman season - averaging 8.1 points and 3.5 rebounds per game, while helping lead the Sabercats to a strong 17-10 overall record in the state's 4A Division.
Under the leadership of terrific Head Coach Lucas Ramirez, the Saguaro program has gained momentum in recent years, and the arrival of Elrod has only accelerated their upward trajectory. Ramirez is one of the top coaches in the state, after coaching at many different levels, including college basketball, and he has transformed the Saguaro HS basketball program quickly since taking over the program in recent years. Ramirez works very hard to develop his players, and the emergence of top young prospects like Elrod are helping the program reach new heights quickly.
Elrod's combination of size, strength, and basketball IQ allows him to impact the game in multiple ways. As a freshman, he consistently played beyond his years - guarding multiple positions, finishing through contact, and knocking down shots from the perimeter, while also being able to make plays inside the paint. Elrod is a serious talent that plays well beyond his years, after always playing against older competition since he was very young.
Elrod’s basketball development is also benefiting greatly from his involvement with one of the nation’s premier club programs, the heavily Adidas-sponsored and prestigious Compton Magic. Competing on the top Adidas Gauntlet circuit with their 16U squad this spring and summer, Elrod is gaining national exposure while facing elite competition. This platform is already helping boost his recruiting profile, putting him on the radar of college programs across the country.
More than just a physical talent, Elrod is a mature and driven student-athlete who excels in the classroom. His academic success will provide him with numerous recruiting options down the road, making him a complete prospect that coaches at all levels value. Elrod is also one of the state's top baseball prospects as well, and he will have numerous recruiting options for himself over time.
As he continues to grow and develop, Bentley Elrod is poised to become one of the top overall prospects in the nation's 2028 class. With his combination of size, toughness, and skillset, alongside the guidance of Coach Ramirez and high-level club competition, Elrod is quickly rising to another level.
