On Friday, day one of this year's Pangos Sweet 16 basketball tournament took place at several different locations in Los Angeles, CA. Our Arizona Preps' staff was on hand for much of the day's action at Cabrillo High School as many of the top 16U and 17U teams in the West faced off with one another in front of a large number of college coaches in attendance.
Numerous Arizona prospects were in participation on the day and there were some players that took center stage, and took full advantage of their opportunity to raise their recruiting stock. Here are the top performers that I watched on Friday . . .
Andre Adams 6-9 Prep Power Forward IMG Academy (FL) - 2015
- Adams turned in his best effort that I have seen in almost two years on Friday - leading his club team to a big win on the evening. Adams began the game with a 5-for-5 from the field performance, his best offensive performance, which included a three-pointer and several strong drives to the basket over defenders. Adams looks very mature physically and mentally and is now playing inspired basketball. Adams ran the floor hard and finished strong at the rim. Numerous division-I college programs now look to be in the hunt for his services. If Adams can keep up this pace of effort then he will become one of the top-rated post prospects in America.
Lyrik Shreiner 6-4 Prep Combo-Guard (Undecided) - 2015
- Shreiner turned in his best effort from the point guard position possibly ever on Friday evening, as he proved that he is able to effectively run the point guard position against stiff competition and lead his team to victory. With his club team missing guard prospect Sammy Thompkins for the game (Reebok Breakout Camp), Shreiner manned the point guard position for almost the entire game by himself against a talented group from Utah. Shreiner scored almost at will and looked completely in control - scoring with either hand and making plays for himself and others consistently throughout the game. Shreiner finished his only game on the evening with 26 points and a handful of assists. University of Colorado showed extreme interest in Shreiner after his game. It should get very interesting for him throughout the month of July.
Devin Kirby 6-10 JR Power Forward Basha HS - 2016
- Kirby is a glaring talent with loads of upside and potential. What is most impressive is that he is now coming into his own much faster than expected. Kirby began his game on Friday against Team Bayless with a nice two-handed alley-op dunk. He competed very hard on both ends of the floor and ran the floor hard. Showed a good ability to score inside the paint and also from the perimeter. A fast-rising young talent with elite-high major division-I potential.
Brock Brunkhorst 6-3 JR Combo-Guard Brophy Prep HS - 2016
- Brunkhorst continued his terrific play this club season with another strong overall effort. He scored the basketball at a nice rate and shot the basketball with confidence. He also handled the basketball and led his team from the point position very nicely. He has gotten stronger physically and is coming into his own a great deal. One of the top overall prospects in the 2016 class. Saint Mary's head coach Randy Bennett was showing strong interest on Friday.
Kaveon Moore 6-4 SR Shooting Guard Independence HS - 2015
- Moore turned in his best effort of his young career when it counted on Friday night and drew a lot of attention from college coaches as a result. He scored effectively from inside and out, and when his shot was not falling he played hard on the defensive end of the floor and made up for it. His defense was his best offense in his team's first round victory Friday. Gonzaga assistant coach Donnie Daniels expressed serious interest in Moore after his team's performance.
Nick Allen 6-7 SR Power Forward Willow Canyon HS - 2015
- Allen continued his strong play this club season with an inspired effort. The hard-working and skilled forward prospect rebounded the basketball strong and was an enforcer for his team inside the paint. Allen raised many eyebrows in his team's victory - proving that he can score inside and out and also run the floor with vigor. University of Wyoming now looks to be the clear leader for his services.
Chris Bowling 6-6 JR Small Forward Gilbert HS - 2016
- Bowling played very well for himself on Friday and turned many heads with his ability to shoot the basketball with range He also showed off a nice ability to make plays for himself at the basket against defenders draped all over him. He has a nice mean streak and a competitive spirit that allows him to compete at a high level. While Bowling is thin, he makes up for it with his toughness and drive to win. Another high-major prospect in the 2016 class.
