One of the top overall prospects that I watched this weekend at this year's West Coast Elite Summer Kick-Off tournament in Los Angeles, California, was Deer Valley High School's talented 6-foot-5 rising senior wing Jaret Allen. Allen was a major standout in the event, while leading his Powerhouse Hoops King 17U team to a strong performance in the event.
This weekend's event did not have a winner, as each of the teams simply played in a showcase format in front of college coaches, scouts and media. Allen and his Powerhouse Hoops' group were dominant in the event, and Allen was a major piece to the team's success.
I caught up with Allen's father during the event, and he advised me that his son has not received loads of recruiting interest to date, as the University of Montana seems to be the only division-I program currently in the hunt. If that is the case, this young man is a big-time sleeper prospect with loads of potential and promise for the future.
Jaret Allen is the twin brother of Jalen Allen, who is also 6-foot-5 in height and looks and plays similar to his brother. Jaret Allen is the better college prospect of the two brothers. Jaret is a very skilled and athletic wing prospect that is capable of playing several positions on the floor. He is an excellent shooter of the basketball with a superb release which looks effortless, and, as a result, has unlimited range on his shot. He also has a very good mid-range game, which makes it very difficult for him to be guarded on the perimeter. His athleticism also allows him to play above the rim and finish strong at the basket over defenders.
Jaret is also a very good ball handler and passer - a fundamentally sound prospect. He is a very good defender with excellent length and anticipation in the passing lanes. The sky is the limit for this young talent who has serious upside physically. While he is still very thin physically, over time, as he matures physically and gets stronger, he will see his game progress a great deal.
Both brothers are worthy of serious recruiting attention, if they decide to attend the same college, which is still up in the air, but Jaret Allen is a prime recruiting target and should develop his own share of college recruitment throughout the remainder of the summer's competition.
I will continue to follow the college recruitment closely of both Allen brothers, but will focus heavily on the recruitment of Jaret Allen, as he is a nice looking prospect for the future.
