Coach Mark Wood, who currently coaches the Men's' basketball team at Liberty High School, commenced his coaching career by volunteering at Cactus High School and later became a head coach at the age of 27. He has been forthright about the challenges of coaching, mentioning, "Coaching was tough; it demanded so much time that I had to take a two-year break to devote to my children."

After his hiatus, he resumed his coaching career and has now been with Liberty for (19) years. In total, Coach Wood has spent (27) years in the coaching profession - cherishing his role within his community.

Coach Wood adheres to a distinctive coaching philosophy that prioritizes speed, aggression and relentless full-court press defense.

"Our approach is purposeful and tough. We run a player-led program where empowerment and leadership are key. We utilize basketball as a tool to sculpt our athletes into resilient individuals," Mark Wood explains.

The structure of Liberty's basketball program stands on a solid foundation of core values established by Coach Wood and his staff. These values are:

  • Trust – Demonstrating honesty, consistency, care, and reliability. Listening attentively and being genuinely supportive.
  • Enthusiasm – Maintaining a positively infectious demeanor, using encouraging words and celebrating team achievements without negativity.
  • Selflessness – Prioritizing the team and program's needs over personal desires, embodying the spirit of servant leadership.
  • Courage – Embracing challenges head-on, making morally sound decisions despite difficulties, and demonstrating resilience.
  • Effort – Consistently exerting utmost effort and accepting no excuses in the pursuit of excellence.

In addition to his coaching duties, Coach Wood teaches Psychology at Liberty High School, and has previously taught Health and English. His involvement extends to the Fellowship of Christian Athletes.

Under his leadership, the team clinched the 2024 AIA Arizona 6A State Championship. When discussing the current state of youth sports, Coach Wood expressed concern, stating, "Youth sports have become a commercial enterprise focused too much on profit, which distorts the true essence of youth sports."

Regarding the ideal candidate for his basketball program, Coach Wood asserts, "Our program is for the dedicated and tough. We seek athletes who are selfless, strong, and committed—true 'dawgs' who embody high character and accountability, just like our coaches."

He has a profound affection for the program and the community it fosters.

In summary, Coach Mark Wood’s career and philosophy reflect a deep commitment to developing not just skilled athletes, but principled young men, through the sport of basketball at Liberty High School.
