As Brophy Prep celebrates a 6A State Championship and prepares for a new era of basketball next season, one name is set to become central to their success, 5-foot-11 sophomore point guard Cooper Frakes.
The 5-foot-11 sophomore point guard saw considerable minutes this past season, displaying maturity beyond his years before an unfortunate injury limited his impact late in the year. Despite the setback, Cooper showed some flashes as a tough floor general, earning the trust of his teammates and coaches. Now, with Brophy losing several key seniors to graduation, the spotlight will shift to Frakes as a major piece in the program's plans moving forward.
Cooper will be guided by Brophy Prep Head Coach Matt Hooten, widely regarded as one of the top coaches in Arizona high school basketball. Under Hooten’s leadership, Frakes is expected to become a true “coach on the floor” — running the offense, setting the tone defensively and leading by example with his toughness and basketball IQ.
Frakes’ game is built on a strong foundation, as he is an elite ball handler and passer, a capable and disciplined defender with quick lateral movement, and an excellent shooter who thrives on taking high-percentage shots within the flow of the offense. What sets him apart, however, is his selflessness. Cooper enjoys setting up his teammates and orchestrating the game more than hunting for his own points.
A self-described gym rat, Cooper lives in the gym, working almost daily with top-rated trainer and former NFL player Amp Lee. His dedication to developing his craft has been relentless, and it shows in his rapid progression as a player. Through countless hours of training, Cooper has not only improved physically but mentally — sharpening his decision-making and leadership skills.
Brophy Prep will return a very talented core of players next season, and with Frakes steering the ship, expectations will remain sky-high for the Broncos. With his work ethic, passion for the game, and natural leadership abilities, Cooper Frakes is positioned to have a breakout junior season and cement himself as one of the top young point guards in Arizona.
We will continue following Cooper’s journey closely this spring and summer, as the talented guard prepares to help take Brophy Prep basketball to new heights during the 2025-26 season.
