I am very proud and excited to announce that on January 15th Chandler-Gilbert Community College will be retiring the jersey of one of the best Arizona performers in the history of our state, former North High School graduate and all-time leading scorer for Chandler-Gilbert CC, the amazing Davin White. White is the most prolific scorer in the history of Chandler-Gilbert's basketball program, and had an amazing basketball career. White was a top performer for Cal-State Northridge, played a long professional career overseas and even had a nice stint with the Phoenix Suns (NBA). This month, White will become the first ever basketball player to have his jersey retired @ the program. A very classy move by Chandler-Gilbert CC and their athletic program. On January 15th, the Coyotes will retire Davin White's #34 forever.
Davin White was a no brainer for this amazing award, as he led Chandler-Gilbert in just about every statistical category during his career at the basketball program in the early 2000's. White is the all-time leader for the program in career points (873), points per/game (28.2), field goals made (324), free-throws made (170), season assists (247), season steals (114) and all-time steals (212). White is among the very best ever junior college performers in the Arizona Community College Athletic Conference (ACCAC) to ever grace the basketball hardwood for a conference that has loads of rich basketball history and tradition. White is a very special role model for Arizona youth.
White is also a very special player and person to me, as he is among the very best players and people I have ever been around in my (30) year history of coaching and scouting Arizona basketball. White was the first top player that I ever coached in 1998 with a club program called the Arizona SLAM. White's tremendous individual level of talent set the tone for the level of players that I would later coach with numerous club programs, including the Arizona Magic for (17) years, which produced hundreds of Division-I players. White was truly the first one - my day one.
A native of South Phoenix, where White lived less than a mile from where I lived and grew up in South Phoenix, we had a special bond for many years until we lost contact, as he traveled the world for many years - turning in one of the best international professional careers in the history of the game. White went from the Southside, to learning different languages and experiencing many different cultures around the world. He became household name around the world among his many fans, and now, finally, he will be rewarded back home in Arizona. Very well deserved and a very classy move by Chandler-Gilbert CC - something I would love to see more of around the state's other junior colleges and high school programs.
