The wave of high-profile player movement across Arizona high school basketball continued this week in a major way, as Carter Bagley, a talented 6-foot-4, 190-pound rising junior and one of the top prospects in Arizona’s 2028 class, announced on social media that he is transferring from St. Mary’s High School to Sunnyslope High School. Bagley’s decision is another major offseason development and further adds to what has already been a record-setting spring and summer of high-profile transfers across the state.
One of the premier young guards in Arizona and the West, Bagley is coming off an outstanding sophomore season in which he helped lead St. Mary’s to a runner-up finish for the Open Division State Championship. He was instrumental throughout the season and recorded a career-high 48-point performance, displaying the scoring ability and offensive versatility that have made him one of the state’s most highly regarded young prospects.
Bagley now joins a Sunnyslope program that enters the season with championship aspirations after winning the Open Division State Championship last year, and climbing as high as No. 4 nationally in the MaxPreps national rankings. His addition gives Head Coach Ray Portela another elite piece to an already loaded roster.
Sunnyslope returns one of the nation’s premier prospects in Darius Wabbington, the 6-foot-10 senior who is widely regarded as one of the top high-major Division-I prospects in the country. The Vikings are also led by standout point guard Delton Prescott, Arizona’s top floor general who helped guide the program to last season’s Open Division State Championship.
Bagley also joins two other significant offseason additions in Bentley Elrod, a 6-foot-5 rising junior who transferred from Scottsdale Saguaro High School, and Donovan Palmer, another 6-foot-9 rising junior who arrives from Chandler High School. Both Elrod and Palmer are coming off excellent spring and summer performances and are expected to play major roles this season alongside Bagley.
Bagley becomes another prominent member of the St. Mary’s program to transfer this offseason, further highlighting the unprecedented movement that has reshaped the Arizona high school basketball landscape.
While Wabbington and Prescott will shoulder much of the leadership this season, the future of the Sunnyslope program appears exceptionally bright. Bagley, Elrod and Palmer now form a talented young nucleus that will be counted on, along with the rest of Sunnyslope’s outstanding young talent, to carry on the program’s winning tradition. Keeping that trio together over the next two seasons could prove to be a major key to Sunnyslope’s continued success as Coach Ray Portela looks to keep the Vikings among Arizona’s elite programs and in contention for additional Open Division State Championships.
Sunnyslope has established itself as one of the premier high school basketball programs in the country, and with the addition of Carter Bagley, the Vikings have once again positioned themselves as one of the favorites to compete for another Open Division title this season, while building a foundation that should keep them among the state’s best for years to come.
