One player that our staff definitely missed on this high school season is Dysart High School's talented and gifted 6-foot-9 senior post Mikel Beyers. We caught our first glimpse of Beyers in this year's recent Arizona Spring Showcase, organized by tournament director Chad Groth. I came away very impressed with this young man's ability and potential for the future.
Beyers is an underrated prospect in big-time proportions, as he is coming off a stellar senior season for Dysart High School, but has gone almost unnoticed by most college coaches around the country.
This high school season, Beyers put up terrific numbers - averaging 17.2 points and 11.7 rebounds per/game. He also shot 82% from the free-throw line on the season, while leading Dysart to a 18-8 record on the season.
Beyers is definitely among the very elite available prospects in the state's 2017 Class this spring. While still a sleeper prospect, this young man should blossom in the future.
Beyers is a serious talent with excellent length of body and a nice overall skillset. He has excellent potential as a player, as he is long and rangy, and has a very good ability to shoot the basketball with unlimited range on his shot. While his length and size suggests that he is a post player, Beyers enjoys playing on the perimeter and in the open floor, where he is able to make plays with the basketball in his hands and also finish plays well above the rim. He is a good ball handler and passer for his size, that likes to advance the basketball up the floor, and also runs the floor like a guard.
Beyers is also a good and active rebounder that rebounds outside of his area on the floor. He is a solid defender with good lateral quickness, and is an exceptional shotblocker that also has the ability to change shots. He still needs to mature physically and get a body, but once he does, watch out.
Beyers is a big-time talent with a very bright future.
He advised me that currently he only has scholarship offers from several local junior colleges, and he also still needs a passing test score to become academically eligible for NCAA requirements. If he can qualify academically, this young man should receive loads of college recruitment this spring.
Beyers is definitely one player that we missed on this high school season, but one prospect that many college coaches will not miss on this spring.
