In case you missed it, Desert Vista High School's superb 5-foot-10 rising senior guard Sabrina Haines is off the recruiting board after giving an early verbal commitment to the Arizona State Sun Devils. Among the most talented overall prospects in Arizona's 2015 class, Haines was receiving loads of division-I interest from college programs, but decided to end her college recruitment - joining close friend and former high school teammate Armani Hawkins (Arizona State commit) as a 2015 pledge for the Sun Devils.
Haines helped lead her Desert Vista High School girl’s program to a Division-I state title in 2014, and an almost undefeated season. Led by young but talented head coach Jontar Coleman, the combination of a trio of division-I prospects for Desert Vista was too much for opposing teams in the state last season. 5-foot-7 senior point guard Emily Wolph (Santa Clara signee), 6-foot-4 junior post Kristine Anigwe (Cal commit) and Sabrina Haines each combined to lead the Thunder to a Top 25 national ranking last season and a 30-2 overall record.
Sabrina Haines averaged 9.9 points, 3.8 rebounds, 2.2 assists and 3 steals per/game as a junior.
Haines transferred to Desert Vista during the off-season (2013) after her sophomore season - leaving Mesa Mountain View HS, where she spent her first two high school seasons and started for the Toros in their backcourt. The move by Haines was a result of her parents moving into the Desert Vista district.
Haines is a combo-guard prospect in high school, but her mother advised me that she will look to play the point guard position in college and enjoys playing the position a great deal. Haines is also an excellent defender and takes pride on the defensive end of the floor.
Haines was selected as last year’s Arizona Preps Fall Showcase Tournament Most Valuable Player, after a strong performance in the event.
Haines chose Arizona State over offers and strong interest from such programs as UNLV, USC, Colorado, Oregon State, NAU and Grand Canyon.
Haines and Hawkins share the backcourt this summer for a loaded group of prospects for the Arizona Blue Star girl's club program.
