Trevor Browne High School has seen many changes to it's roster over the last 10 years. After once carrying a roster filled with serious division-I talent, the program has lost much of its athletic luster in recent years due to a lack of growth in the school's district area.
Hard working head coach David Guzman has worked diligently to return the basketball program to the dominence of the mid-2000's, but after finishing with a dismal 9-18 overall record last season, the Bruins (2-3) have seen a slow start to the 2012-2013 high school basketball season. Trevor Browne dropped their first two games of this season on the road at the hands of Saguaro High School (70-54) and then to Red Mountain HS (79-48). After a blowout vicotry over Casa Grande HS at home, the Bruins would lose again to Santa Rita HS (62-56).
Facing neighborhood rival Maryvale HS (1-1) on Tuesday evening on the road, the Bruins looked to get back into the win column in front of a large home crowd for the Panthers. With a talented Maryvale team looking to remain undefeated on the young season, the Bruins had their minds set on a big road victory.
Trevor Browne would take a 20-16 lead in the second period after a driving basket, while Maryvale would go cold late in the second period. With Maryvale's two top performers, 6-foot-4 senior Keshan Spears and 6-foot-6 junior forward Jorge Cano, struggling from the field, Trevor Browne would build a 27-19 halftime lead.
Trevor Browne would build their lead to 41-28 with less than a minute remainning in the third period.
In the fourth period, Maryvale would quickly get a spark after a nice drive and two-handed dunk from Jorge Cano, but after a technical foul from a Maryvale player, Trevor Browne would build a 47-32 lead before Maryvale would get the basketball back in their hands.
Trevor Browne would cruise to a 57-40 win on Maryvale's home floor, their second victory of the young season.
"It is really good to get a win," said Guzman after the game. "We don't have much size, but we play really hard."
