Basha High School’s Kingston Montague has established himself as one of the most productive young guards in the country, and after an excellent first two seasons at the high school level, the 6-foot-1 combo guard is deserving of much more attention nationally. Montague has been Basha’s top overall performer and is coming off a tremendous sophomore season in which he was selected as the Arizona 6A Premier Region Player of the Year and earned numerous postseason honors, including First-Team All-Conference recognition.
As a sophomore, Montague emerged as one of the top young performers in Arizona and nationally. He averaged 19.1 points, 3.3 assists, 2.9 rebounds and 1.4 steals per contest, while consistently carrying a major offensive load for the Bears. His success did not stop with the high school season.
Montague followed his tremendous sophomore campaign with a big spring and summer, while competing with the prestigious Nike-sponsored Oakland Soldiers (CA) program on the Nike EYBL circuit. The Soldiers provided Montague with an opportunity to compete against many of the nation’s premier prospects in the 2028 class, and he shined against elite competition. His status as one of the circuit’s most dangerous young scorers has also been recognized by other evaluators. I watched Montague perform throughout the spring and summer, and I came away extremely impressed at each Nike EYBL event. He made numerous shots, displayed a commanding presence on the floor and, quite simply, often looked like the best player on the floor when he took center stage.
Montague is a big-time performer who seems to get even better when the lights come on. He is an excellent shot-maker with the ability to score the basketball from all three levels. He can make shots from well beyond the three-point line, create offense off the dribble and score in the mid-range, while also getting into the paint and finishing. He has also developed into an underrated passer and on-ball defender.
For everything Montague has accomplished already, I believe he remains underrated nationally. Montague should be regarded much higher among the nation’s top prospects in the 2028 Class, and I expect him to become one of the better sleeper prospects nationally over the next year as more Division-I college programs begin to focus heavily on his class.
Montague currently has Division-I offers from the University of San Diego, Texas-Arlington and Nevada, and his recruitment should continue to grow. He is well deserving of many more Division-I scholarship offers and, in my evaluation, has the ability to develop into a high-major Division-I guard.
His production, shot-making ability, toughness, confidence and success against elite national competition have already proven that he belongs in the national conversation. Montague is now set for what should be a tremendous junior season. If his first two high school seasons are any indication, he could emerge as Arizona’s leading scorer this season and further elevate his national recruitment.
The combination of Montague and talented 6-foot-4 rising junior Layton Leonard should also make Basha one of the state’s most dangerous teams and a serious contender for an Open Division State Championship this season.
Montague has already accomplished a great deal during the early stages of his high school career, but his best basketball remains ahead of him. I expect his junior season to further establish him as one of the nation’s better 2028 guard prospects.
