One of the biggest offseason storylines in Arizona high school basketball came when 6-foot-5 rising junior Bentley Elrod announced his transfer from Scottsdale Saguaro High School to state powerhouse Sunnyslope High School. While the move generated considerable attention on social media, the true impact of Elrod’s transfer may not be fully appreciated until the 2026-27 high school season begins. If his performance throughout the spring and summer is any indication, however, Sunnyslope may have landed one of the state’s most underrated rising stars.

Elrod has enjoyed an outstanding summer wearing a Sunnyslope uniform, consistently proving he has the skill set to become a major contributor for one of the nation’s elite high school programs. A versatile 6-foot-5 forward with a strong, athletic frame, Elrod impacts the game in a variety of ways. He can stretch the floor with his three-point shooting, knock down mid-range jumpers, rebound at a high level, and competes with tremendous energy on both ends of the floor. His versatility allows him to fill multiple roles, making him a difficult matchup for opposing defenses.

Elrod first turned heads with his impressive play during the recent Section 7 Team Tournament, where he was among Sunnyslope’s top performers throughout the event. He has continued that momentum this summer, most recently delivering another outstanding showing at Nevada Live last weekend. Against Mesa High School, Elrod poured in 29 points, while showcasing his complete offensive arsenal. He followed that performance with a 16-point effort against nationally respected Bishop Gorman High School (NV), once again demonstrating that he can produce against elite competition.

As a result of his outstanding summer, Elrod’s college recruitment is beginning to gain momentum.
Brown University and Claremont University have already expressed serious interest, but I expect many more college programs to enter the picture over the coming months. Elrod projects as an excellent Division-I prospect for the right program, and his best basketball is still ahead of him. His exposure will only continue to increase throughout the remainder of the July evaluation period.

Elrod will travel this July with his highly regarded Compton Magic 16U program, one of the nation’s premier grassroots organizations. The roster is loaded with elite prospects, ensuring that college coaches from across the country will have plenty of opportunities to evaluate him. Playing alongside and against high-level talent should accelerate both his development and his recruitment.

All of the experience Elrod is gaining this spring and summer should translate into a tremendous junior season under legendary Head Coach Ray Portela at Sunnyslope. The Vikings enter next season with championship expectations after capturing the Arizona Open Division State Championship this past season. They will once again feature one of the state’s deepest and most talented rosters, led by 6-foot-11 rising senior Darius Wabbington, who recently represented the United States on the USA U18 team, along with elite senior point guard Delton Prescott. With Elrod now joining that talented core, Sunnyslope appears well-positioned to make another serious run at the Open Division title.

I will continue to follow Elrod’s development closely throughout the remainder of his high school career, but he is unquestionably one of Arizona’s fastest-rising prospects. His combination of size, versatility, competitiveness and rapidly improving skillset makes him a player college coaches should monitor closely.
If his current trajectory continues, Bentley Elrod will not only be one of the state’s top juniors, but he should also play a significant role in Sunnyslope’s pursuit of a second consecutive Arizona Open Division State Championship.
