The Spirit of Cotton Award is presented annually to an individual who best represents the core values of high school athletics in Arizona. Named in honor of longtime Arizona basketball figure, legendary Phoenix Suns' Head Coach Cotton Fitzsimmons, the award recognizes a coach or contributor who demonstrates exceptional leadership, integrity, sportsmanship, and a lasting commitment to developing student-athletes both on and off the court. It is not simply about wins - it is about impact. Recipients of this award are those who elevate their programs, serve as mentors to young athletes, and represent the game of basketball with class and purpose. Mark Wood’s influence this season, with his players, his program, and the broader basketball community, made him a clear and deserving choice.
What truly separates Mark Wood is his ability to build a culture. His program is rooted in accountability, discipline, and team-first basketball. Players understand their roles, compete at a high level, and trust one another - clear signs of a coach who prioritizes both development and chemistry. Wood’s influence extends beyond the court - helping shape student-athletes into leaders while preparing them for success at the next level.
The Arizona Preps Coach of the Year award represents excellence at the highest level and Mark Wood delivered in every category. Now, with both Coach of the Year honors and the Spirit of Cotton Award, Wood’s 2025–2026 season will be remembered as one of the most impactful coaching performances in recent Arizona basketball history.
