The Sunnyslope High School basketball program has seen its share of success, but never like this. Currently ranked an amazing #3 nationally with an amazing 22-1 record, they stand as Arizona’s top team, and 5-foot-11junior point guard Delton Prescott is the engine behind this extraordinary campaign.
Prescott is very unique and is unlike any other guard in Arizona. His explosiveness is matched only by his strength and pace. He pushes the ball up the floor faster than most defenders can react - creating mismatches and making him nearly impossible to guard one-on-one. This was on full display during Sunnyslope’s big road win at Brophy Prep on Friday evening, where Prescott took over the second half - attacking in transition and finishing through traffic. As Sunnyslope’s floor general, he runs the offense with poise and efficiency, ensuring his teammates shine. His court vision and passing lead to high assist numbers, and his defense, anchored by quick hands and shifty footwork, makes him a two-way force.
Since stepping onto the varsity court as a freshman, Prescott has been integral to Head Coach Ray Portela’s system. He’s delivered strong and efficient performances every year, but this season is his best yet. Sunnyslope is poised to capture the Open Division State Championship this season, after falling short last year against Perry High School and now-graduated superstar Koa Peat (Univrsity of Arizona). With the title race wide open, all eyes are on Sunnyslope, and Delton Prescott.
Though he was once a top-10 national middle school prospect, the evolving recruitment landscape has meant fewer Division-I offers than some might expect for Prescott. He still holds firm offers from Arizona State, Cal, Portland, San Francisco, Fresno State, Bryant and McNeese State. With his elite leadership ability and Sunnyslope’s national prominence, it will be fascinating to see which program ultimately lands him.
As Sunnyslope prepares for a marquee matchup against #2 Millennium High School this week, the stage is set for a thrilling finish to the season. With Prescott at the helm, Sunnyslope is not just chasing an Open Division State Title, they are rewriting school history.
I look forward to watching Delton Prescott and the Sunnyslope team throughout the rest of the season, and will bring you all the updates as their journey continues to unfold.
