Arizona high school basketball is entering a bold new era, and 6-foot-5 rising junior forward DJ Spencer is helping lead the charge. Spencer announced his transfer from Desert Vista High School to powerhouse Millennium High School - creating a major stir on social media and positioning Millennium as a frontrunner for next year’s Open Division State Championship. The timing couldn’t be more significant with superstar Koa Peat (University of Arizona signee) graduating from Perry High School, after leading the program to four-consecutive state titles. The door is now wide open for a new program to rise to the top. Millennium may now be that team.
Spencer had a strong sophomore campaign at Desert Vista - averaging 14.2 points, 7.1 rebounds and 2.1 assists per game. A physically strong and athletic frontcourt presence, Spencer was a consistent producer for a talented Desert Vista team that has now seen multiple players transfer out, after the departure of former Head Coach Walter Bonner. Spencer stood out with his ability to finish through contact around the rim, rebound aggressively, and bring toughness and energy to both ends of the floor.
Over the past year, his development has accelerated — most notably, with his improved ability to score from the perimeter and run the floor in transition. This spring, Spencer had an excellent performance on the Nike EYBL club circuit - playing for the Vegas Elite (NV), a heavily Adidas-sponsored program that competes on the Nike EYBL circuit. He emerged as one of the top 2027 prospects in the West.
His addition immediately bolsters Millennium’s frontcourt and adds crucial depth and production to an already talented roster. His presence will allow superstar rising senior guard Cameron Holmes more flexibility to operate on the perimeter, making Millennium a much more dangerous offensive unit.
Transfers have been reshaping the high school basketball landscape in Arizona for several seasons now — with major impacts. One of the most notable examples came last season, when John Mattingly transferred from Sunnyslope High School to Central High School and went on to lead Central to a big State Title.
As more players explore transfer opportunities across the state, Millennium could be poised to benefit further. With Spencer now in place and more potential moves looming, the Tigers are quickly assembling one of the most intriguing and competitive rosters in Arizona. Stay tuned — Millennium may not be done yet.
