For the fourth consecutive season, Perry High School is headed to the Open Division State Championship game, and once again, superstar 6-foot-8 senior Koa Peat is at the center of it all. The five-star recruit and one of the most dominant players in Arizona high school basketball history overcame a hand injury to lead the Pumas past Sandra Day O’Connor in the semifinals - cementing his status as a legendary figure in the state’s hoops scene.
Peat, who suffered the injury during the state playoffs, showed no signs of slowing down. He started the game and never came off the floor, proving why he is considered one of the toughest competitors in the country. His leadership and all-around skill-set helped Perry improve to 26-2 on the season, setting up a championship showdown against Sunnyslope High School on Saturday evening.
A victory would give Perry its fourth-consecutive State Championship, and solidify Peat’s place among the greatest players in Arizona history, alongside such Arizona legends as Mike Bibby, Sean Elliott, Jerryd Bayless, Nico Mannion and many others.
Few players have dominated the state’s high school basketball landscape like Peat, who has been a force since his freshman year. With a blend of size, skill, and versatility, he has drawn national attention, with his final five college choices including Arizona, Arizona State, Texas, Baylor and Houston.
A win on Saturday wouldn’t just add another trophy to Perry’s collection—it would leave no doubt about Peat’s lasting impact. His name would be etched alongside the all-time greats, a player whose dominance and winning mentality have defined an era of Arizona basketball, and also inspired young players across the state in the Arizona basketball community.
