The defending 4A State Champion Salpointe Catholic Lancers looked like they graduated most of their team from last season. There has been a lot of questions regarding if the Lancers will be in a rebuilding year. The Lancers have silenced the critics with a hot 6-0 start, with key wins over Nogales, American Leadership-Queen Creek, Tucson Magnet and Pueblo High School.
One of the under-the-radar keys contributing to their hot start is 6-foot-9 senior post Myles Hersha. His stats don’t jump out, as he is averaging 6 points, 3.2 rebounds, 1.2 assists and 1.8 blocks per/game. It seems clearly that he has been improving. He had a monstrous game in his team’s win over Pueblo High School this week, as he contributed 14 points, 5 rebounds, and 4 blocks.
I have observed Myles throughout his underclassmen career. First, he seemed timid, but displayed an elite skill-set with a nice mid-range jumper, soft touch, fantastic footwork, and a high basketball IQ. Fast forward to his latest performance, and he seemed very confident and added some muscle definition from the summer.
Hersha has tremendous upside, as he has improved leaps and bounds from just the summer. As he continues to mature and grow, he will be a steal for the right college program.
I look forward to seeing his rematch with Pueblo’s 6-foot-11 post Zach Morgan next month. Salpointe Catholic continues to reload by producing talented prospects.
Salpointe Head Coach Jim Reynolds has done a great job running Salpointe Catholic’s basketball factory, as they have produced players like Majok Deng (Pepperdine) and Evan Nelson (Harvard).
