Two of the top remaining unsigned prospects in Arizona's 2017 class have now officially made their college decisions. Maricopa High School's talented twin brothers, 6-foot-4 wing prospects Terrell Handy-Johnson (pictured) and Darrell Handy-Johnson, were soaring under the recruiting radar throughout the spring and summer, but both played very well on the club circuit. This week, both prospects decided on a top-rated junior college program in California.
After mulling over several junior college options for themselves, this talented duo decided to accept offers from Ventura Junior College (CA) for the fall. Ventura JC assistant coach Lester Neal, a former Arizona State standout performer and former ACCAC college coach at Scottsdale JC and Chandler-Gilbert JC, was responsible for recruiting the talented duo to the program.
These two twin brothers soared well below the recruiting radar throughout their high school careers, and I was very impressed with their performances in our recent Arizona Preps Spring Classic, and also their performance this summer during the July evaluation period. In fact, I was amazed that more schools were not recruiting these two talented individuals. Both prospects played for Sal Garcia and his successful Team Zona club program.
Both prospects are extremely talented with excellent physical frames and athleticism for the future, and I expect both prospects to soar over time, and especially after a stint in the junior college ranks for two seasons. Both prospects possess excellent upside as well, and are strong two-way performers that should see mid-major division-I level college recruitment over time.
Congratulations to both prospects and the Team Zona program on their recent signings, and good luck to them in the future from our staff.
Arizona Hoop Review Scouting Report: Terrell Handy-Johnson is a big-time sleeper prospect that has excellent length, broad shoulders and superior athleticism. He has a good motor and makes plays on both ends of the floor at a high level. A strong two-way player. He is a solid shooter that needs to add range on his shot consistently to maximize his potential as a player. A solid ball handler and passer. Has good versatility. An excellent finisher. An active and strong rebounder and shotblocker. Runs the floor and is very good in the open floor. Has excellent potential for the future with good upside. Has the potential to become a serious division-I talent over time. Already is a mid-major prospect, but with a year or two of juco he could become a high-major prospect.
Arizona Hoop Review Scouting Report: Darrell Handy-Johnson is also a big-time sleeper prospect that has excellent length, broad shoulders and superior athleticism. He has a good motor and makes plays on both ends of the floor as well. A good two-way player also, but still somewhat raw offensively. He is a solid shooter that needs to add range on his shot consistently to maximize his potential as a player. A good-mid-range player that scores most of his baskets inside the paint and in transition, or while slashing to the basket. A solid ball handler and passer. Has good versatility. An excellent finisher. An active and strong rebounder and shotblocker. Runs the floor very well. Has excellent potential for the future with good upside. Has the potential to become a serious division-I talent over time with continued hard work.
