Pure Dynamite are the two words that sum up Mesa High’s returning leading scorer Ashiian Hunter. Hunter has been having an explosive off-season going into her senior campaign.
Last season she averaged 20.3 points, 3.4 assists, 5 rebounds and 3.3 steals per/game, which earned her 6A 1st Team All-State and 6A East Valley Region Player of the Year accolades.
Currently she is receiving heavy JUCO interest, which I believe she would be a steal for any college program.
Hunter is an elite floor general who does a fantastic job in creating scoring opportunities for herself or her teammates. She has a great IQ with elite vision and looks to get everyone involved. Hunter is a three-level scorer who has great finishing ability at the rim. She also has long range on her shot and utilizes her mid range attack. I like her shot selection, as she takes good shots and makes great decisions offensively. Hunter has elite ball handling and, just with her offensive skillset alone, she can change the forecast of the game by making huge plays on both ends of the floor.
Hunter has a very athletic frame and is a phenomenal defender, both on and off the ball. In the club games I have observed, she didn’t hesitate to be a pressure defender on the opposing point guards. Her cat-like reflexes tend to disrupt the opposing team’s offensive rhythm, which results in forced turnovers and steals. Hunter can quickly turn turnovers into transition opportunities, as she knows how to strike the iron when it’s hot.
Overall Hunter is one of my favorite prospects to watch compete, because she is highly skilled with tremendous upside. She would be a fantastic pick up for a Division-2 college, and would be ready to compete and contribute right away. I am excited to see her compete for her senior campaign at Mesa High School.
