Arizona basketball continues to produce elite talent at a national level, and one name college coaches across the country are quickly beginning to prioritize is Maurice Carter II, a 6-foot sophomore guard from Willow Canyon High School and one of the premier prospects in Arizona’s loaded 2028 class. Carter has already established himself as one of the elite overall prospects in the state, regardless of class, and after an excellent spring and summer start, his national recruitment is beginning to soar. While playing this spring and summer with the heavily Adidas-sponsored Compton Magic 16U program, Carter has emerged as one of the hottest performers on the grassroots circuit after strong performances during the NCAA Spring Evaluation Period. As a result, Division-I programs have wasted little time getting involved.

Carter currently has received scholarship offers from LSU, Cal, Nevada, Jackson State and High Point University - (5) excellent Division-I programs from different levels that clearly recognize his tremendous skillset, athleticism and long-term potential. While it is still early in his recruiting process, there currently do not appear to be any clear leaders in his recruitment, but expect many more schools to aggressively pursue Carter over time. As more high-major programs begin shifting focus toward the 2028 class nationally, Maurice Carter is one prospect that will undoubtedly continue gaining major attention. And for good reason.

Carter is coming off a tremendous sophomore season at Willow Canyon High School, where he elevated both his individual production and the overall success of the program. After putting together an excellent freshman campaign, Carter returned this season and took another major step forward in his development, averaging 21 points, 4.1 rebounds, 4.8 assists and 2.9 steals per game while helping lead Willow Canyon to a tremendous 24-6 overall record in Arizona’s highly competitive 5A Division.

Willow Canyon developed into one of the state’s elite teams this season before suffering a heartbreaking 67-66 defeat to eventual 5A State Champion Central High School in the 5A State Semi-finals. Despite the difficult ending this season, Carter’s impact on Willow Canyon basketball was undeniable. A dynamic guard prospect and one of the most athletic guards in the country for his size, Carter impacts games in numerous ways. His explosiveness, athleticism, scoring ability and ability to create opportunities for teammates make him one of the nation’s most intriguing young guard prospects.

Carter is currently competing this spring and summer with the nationally respected Compton Magic 16U program, one of the premier grassroots programs in America, which will place him directly in front of virtually every high-major Division-I coaching staff in the country throughout the spring and summer evaluation periods.

I personally view Maurice Carter as one of my favorite overall prospects in Arizona, regardless of class. His blend of athleticism, production, confidence and upside makes him a prospect that simply jumps off the page when evaluating young talent. He also comes from excellent basketball bloodlines. His father, Maurice Carter, was a standout performer in his playing days and also played professionally, providing Maurice II with a tremendous foundation and understanding of the game from an early age.

The early returns are already extremely impressive. Maurice Carter is off to an excellent recruiting start, but this appears to be only the beginning. Look for his recruitment to continue exploding throughout the spring and summer months, as one of Arizona basketball’s brightest young stars continues his rapid rise toward national prominence.

Arizona Preps Scouting Report: Maurice Carter is among the top overall talents and prospects in the state, regardless of class. An explosive athlete with serious bounce and physical strength, Carter is a big time young talent that has flourished at a very young age and is just beginning to realize his potential. An excellent ball handler and passer that sees the floor and makes plays for himself and others, he is a difficult guard to defend and can get to anywhere he wants on the floor with the dribble. A strong driver and finisher. Pushes the ball up the floor with the pass, and is very quick off the dribble. A good shooter with range om his shot, but is at his best as a creator. Has excellent body control and physical strength, and is very agile. An excellent defender with strong lateral quickness and quick hands and feet. A big time guard prospect for the future. A high major PG prospect.
