Greenway High School continues to be led by long-time terrific head coach Howard Mueller. Mueller is as dedicated a high school coach as there is in the country, and he has coached Greenway for more than 30+ years. This season, Greenway is off to a 6-3 start on the high school season, after a recent loss to Willow Canyon High School. The team's top performer this high school season has been 6-foot-3, 165-pound junior combo-guard Scotty Shaver. Shaver has done it all thus far this season for the Demons, and is gaining some attention as a result.
Shaver is the son of another long-time coach in the valley, his father Scott Shaver. As a result, the younger Shaver has been around the game all of his life - a feature that benefits him nicely as he is a gym rat. Shaver loves the game of basketball and works very hard on his game to progress as a player.
This high school season, Shaver has led the Greenway team in scoring and is the team's best three-point shooter. Shaver also takes pride in defending the opposing team's best player, and accepts challenges on and off the floor, as he is a true leader for his teammates. Still a junior, Shaver is progressing nicely as a player.
Shaver is a big-time shooter of the basketball, his best asset as a player. He has a pure shooting stroke and has nice range on his shot. He is able to stretch the defense nicely and is a threat from anywhere on the floor. At 6-3, Shaver is able to play either guard spot on the floor, but he is at his best when catching and shooting the basketball on the floor. He is crafty as a player, and also is effective as a scorer as well - capable of creating scoring opportunities for himself off the dribble as well. He still needs to improve his overall quickness as a player on both ends of the floor to reach his maximum potential as a player.
Shaver is a good ball handler and passer of the ball. A floor general of sorts with the basketball in his hands, Shaver likes to make assists to open teammates and makes the offense go when he has the basketball in his hands.
A fiery competitor, Shaver competes hard on both ends of the floor, and takes pride in his play and is a winner. This young man has won at every level he has played growing up, and he has also competed against the state's best prospects over time - helping him to develop as a player.
As a result of his strong play this high school season, and also a good performance last spring and summer on the club circuit while playing for the Arizona Heat, Shaver is beginning to receive interest from numerous smaller college programs. He is also a good student, so qualifying academically will be no problem for him.
Shaver has developed into one of the better, but lesser known top performers in the state's 2017 class this season, and I look for him to continue to develop, while leading Greenway HS to a strong season this year in the state's Division-II Class.
